Abstract

Today, handheld devices with improving computing capabilities, such as the Pocket PC, are being used for a variety of applications. The motivation of this study is the ANSI/INCITS 389-393:2005 suite of standards that provide protocols for describing a user interface socket. The specifications within this standard provide the opportunity for future entertainment equipment such as TVs, VCRs and home theatre systems to be controlled using a single programmable remote control known as a Universal Remote Console (URC). This standard aims at enabling hand held devices such as the Pocket PC to be used as URCs. These URCs will detect compliant devices and construct a user interface based on certain information provided by the target device in the form of certain standards-compliant structured files written in eXtensible Markup Language (.xml) and Resource Description File (RDF) formats. The URC interface generator can thus detect any compliant device and automatically generate user interface based on just these files and access to the target's socket interface. The URC need not have any prior knowledge about any target device, and does not require any new programming to detect any new complaint target device. The aim of this study is to create URCs for medical devices/services. Users of these products may have diverse abilities and roles, with roles including doctors, nurses, home caregivers, and patients. Each user can be expected to prefer individually customized interfaces with personalized control and display features. Different users have different abilities, which influence their ability to use an application. The algorithm developed and evaluated in this thesis addresses generation of individualized interfaces, for diverse users, based on their preferences and abilities.
