Abstract
A physiological parameter which is of great clinical significance in determining overall patient health is absolute blood flow. The absolute blood flow parameter is a measure of the volume of blood which passes through a vascular structure per unit of time. Many methods have been attempted to date to measure absolute blood flow, but the methods which have proven most accurate have also been invasive to the patient. In this essay a newly emerging non-invasive method of determining absolute blood flow is discussed, investigated in detail in conjunction with a major medical complex, and the results of the experiments documented. The conclusion reached in the essay is that although the method investigated appears to be very promising, greater accuracy is still required for the method to be generally accepted clinically. Means of achieving greater accuracy in future investigation are also discussed in the essay.
