Abstract
In the present study a knowledge-based expert system is developed to assist in the selection of a horizontal form work system for a cast-in-place concrete structure. The program simulates, via an interactive network of heuristics, the adept knowledge and perception of the concrete construction expert. These heuristics provide computer prompts which, when responded to by the user, enable the system to generate information regarding the most efficient choice for a horizontal slab formwork system. The system knowledge base was developed via literary research and personal interviews with practicing concrete construction experts. The system utilizes the reasoning and representation capabilities of the NEXPERT OBJECT knowledge-based system shell to manage the chaining techniques necessary to compile and analyze the provided information.
