Abstract

In stress analysis one of the significant current problems is the stress distribution around an included cavity of an engineering structure. This investigation was conducted to obtain experimentally the stress distribution for two three dimensional bodies with cavities. The first problem is a sphere with a concentric cavity under diametral compression. The second problem deals with a square strut with spherical cavities along its centerline subjected to an axial compressive load. Stress distributions in the first problem along several lines of special interest are compared with an existing analytical solution. To the best of the author's knowledge there is no analytical solution to the second problem available.
