Abstract
For as long as I can remember I have always had an admiration for those who are visually handicapped. My high school days were spent with a good friend who was blind. This however did not stop him from being a caring and helpful person to me. My engineering background coupled with my desire to help all people who want to help themselves has guided me to this Thesis. My helplessness to this group of people and their response has made it worth wile. In this era of the computer technology and its important role in our daily lives I was assured that a guidance system is technically possible. My goal in this Thesis is to develop a guidance system that can be used by the visually handicapped. This system will automatically tell if an object is in the person's path of travel. The end result after, many long hours and much effort, is included in this Thesis.
