Abstract
The thesis was not meant to be an exhaustive study of the whole career of Samuel Chase--the revolutionary lawyer from Maryland. Rather, my object has been to investigate the role he exercised within the functioning of the Continental Congress during the years, 1774- 1778, when he was most active as a Maryland delegate. More specifically, I have concentrated on four major issues discussed at that Congress-- Trade, Canada, Independence and Confederation--in an effort to determine how influential the Maryland delegate was as well as to determine how faithfully he served the American Cause.
