Abstract
It is the purpose of this paper to discover the relationship of Goldsmith and Sheridan to the writers of sentimental comedy who preceded them--to observe in what respect their theories of comedy and their comedies differed from those of the adherents of sentimental comedy and to discover what result was produced by their attack on this type of comedy called sentimental.
