Abstract
The spiritual heritage of the West is much indebted to an African bishop who, in his life time, was called 'Aurelius Augustinus'. The social and political ideas of the Western Christendom have been influenced in large measure by Augustine's writing. St. Thomas Aquinas the 'Angelic Doctor', who bequeathed the most systematic presentation of Christian philosophy and theology, drew a great deal from the mine of Augustine 's ideas and cited Augustine more than a thousand times in the Summa Theologies alone. Anyone who wishes to understand the tradition of the Western Church cannot be satisfied with a second hand acquaintance with Augustine's writings. It is this conviction that is the motive behind this research in some of Augustine's major works.
