Abstract

In this thesis, an experimental system is developed to detect localized forces within the contact zone of any circular brush. Within this research, the experimental system is applied to a circular wire brush with crimped, steel filaments. The localized force gradients along the brush contact zone width and brush contact zone length are measured and reported. Once local filament forces are determined, past theoretical research concerning filament location within a contact zone is correlated with localized filament forces and a simple model used to determine individual filament forces is discussed.
