Abstract
A computerized procedure for designing reinforced columns in multistory buildings without using tables or design charts is presented. The design procedure for column design is discussed. Also, the changes in the design procedure for slender columns using ACI 318-77 and ACI 318-83 are evaluated. The computer programs were written in fortran 77 and have been executed successfully on the Marquette University Vax 8600 system. The programs are written in a conversational mode so that the user and the computer can respond simultaneously. A pre-processor program was written to create a data file for the main program for the frame analysis. The results from the frame analysis are then used to design columns using the column program. To demonstrate the application of the program two buildings of moderate size and height have been considered.
