Abstract
Wastewater treatment in a petroleum refinery is an important part of the overall operations; it influences both the production schedules of the refinery as well as the quality of the environment. Satisfactory treatment of the refinery wastewaters is important to meet the following three objectives: removal of toxic and objectionable substances from wastewater, render the treated effluent meet the criteria for safe discharge to the environment, potential reuse of the treated water to meet the demands of the refinery. If the wastes are not treated properly, then the refinery would be endangering the quality of the environment. In such cases, enforcement of regulations could result in the closure of the refinery. From the economic point of view, the high costs of wastewater treatment may be burdensome unless the treated water is of such quality that it can be used to meet the shortages of water needed in the refinery. The literature on the refinery wastewater treatment is vast, the subject is very complex, and yet interesting as it touches an important item of commerce. This paper covers the literature search on current technology applicable to treatment of refinery wastewater including the experimental studies performed on the treatment of refinery wastewater. The types of treatment as practiced by different petroleum industries is also referenced. The government regulations as it relates to industrial wastewater which includes petroleum refineries are reviewed. The review also includes the Federal legislation and effluent limitation guideline as it stands today.
