Abstract

Transportation planning and the methodologies and techniques utilized in its accomplishment have undergone many changes with the completion of urban transportation plans in the United States. Consequently, it is timely to review at least one phase of the planning process. In addition, most of the transportation studies have been conducted for urban areas, while regional studies, encompassing one or more such urban areas and the surrounding rural areas, are relatively new. This thesis presents an examination of the conventional approach to the trip generation phase of the travel simulation process and recommends a practical approach for this phase particularly applicable for regional transportation planning. This study is based on the preliminary data obtained from the 1972 Travel Inventory conducted by the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission. The opinions and recommendations contained in this report are strictly the author's and are not necessarily concurred with by the planning agency.
