Abstract
The motivation behind this research is driven by the belief that the creation of a truly reliable solid state reference electrode would result in the most important improvement ever made to the conventional potentiometric pH measurement system. This thesis reports on the experimental investigation of several prototype solid state reference electrodes which were designed to eliminate the reliance of conventional potentiometric specific ion glass electrode techniques on the liquid junction reference electrode. Extensive background is given on the conventional pH measurement method and present state-of-the-art solid state sensing details.
