Abstract
This thesis is concerned with a linear systems design tool involving a numerical optimization algorithm. The specific area of the problem is that of the linear regulator problem of optimal control. The general objective was to develop a numerical design tool (or program) to aid in the design of linear systems in the state space. In this thesis the solution of the linear regulator problem of optimal control is presented and various techniques of obtaining numerical results are then investigated. A specific numerical procedure is then developed and applied to a linear model of a gas turbine engine with torque and fuel control. The numerical results are presented to illustrate the application to a practical problem.
