Abstract

This thesis presents studies in three-dimensional photoelasticity of a square strut with a spheroidal cavity under axial compression and an attempt to use the scattered light method for this problem. Stress distributions along several lines are presented and the experimentally determined stress concentration factors of the three-dimensional models are compared with those of a two-dimensional plate with a slot of the same geometrical proportions.
