Abstract

Information concerning energy absorption of axially compressed circular cylindrical shells with rigid foam cores is of interest for design and application of such devices, but is not readily available from the literature. To obtain such information a series of experiments was designed and performed. A description of the experiments and an evaluation of the results is contained herein. The interaction between the shell and core is described and the effect of core properties on the length of stroke obtainable is discussed.
