Abstract

This thesis is intended to introduce the reader to the problems of large system checkout and to familiarize him with the development of an expert system used as an aid in troubleshooting General Electric's CT scan imager. Chapter 1 of this thesis presents the four basic components of an expert systems . It includes a discussion of the advantages of one these systems along with some examples of what is available today. Chapter 1 also provides a brief description of Prolog along with a a simple example to illustrate its effectiveness. It is the intent of this chapter to present enough of the details of Prolog so that the reader will be able to understand the program developed. Chapter 2 provides the details of the expert system program including flowcharts and examples of its output. A complete listing of the program is given in Appendix A. The idea of building an expert system as a solution to the problem of large system checkout grew out of a course on Automated Reasoning. This course covered both expert systems and the language of Prolog.
