Abstract

Because of the changes in legislation on pollutant discharges, technical improvements in the instrumentation of the wastewater treatment facilities, and the urge to improve the use of existing treatment plants, the interest of real-time control of wastewater treatment facilities has grown in the recent years. A model that represents the treatment process is the first need in developing a real-time control strategy for the wastewater treatment facilities. Since the selection of the model is a crucial factor, different types of models can be tested to find the best model in terms of accuracy and parsimony. Traditional regression models, deterministic models, and neural network models can be developed. This thesis includes the development of a deterministic model for the activated sludge process and compares this model with a neural network model.
