Abstract
The subject of zig-zag reactance is of great importance in the theory of the induction motor as it is one of the prime factors governing the diameter of the circle diagram. This thesis aims to present a fresher treatment of zig-zag permeance by the use of the complex variable and, in particular, the Schwarz-Christoffel Transformation. In addition, a comparison is made with the classic work of C.A. Adams and a appreciable increase in the value of zig-zag permeance is noted. It is hoped the use of the Schwarz-Christoffel Theorem in the solution of this and many other design problems as well, will encourage fuller and more whole-hearted acceptance of this powerful method of attack.
