Abstract
A shape descriptor has been developed which can describe a planar shape independent of its translation, rotation, and scaling. The descriptor is obtained using polar quantization, is in the form of a matrix, takes into consideration the inner geometry of a shape, and is information preserving. The method used, however, utilizes only binary descriptions of the shape. This paper outlines the method, expands it to include gray scale descriptions, and analyzes the results of its implementation.
