Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the performance of an impatt diode as an oscillator when placed in different mounts. In order to do this a theoretical investigation is made of the various possibilities of mounting the diode inside a rectangular waveguide circuit. Several mounts are examined both theoretically and experimentally to determine their effectiveness as coupling circuits as well as their transmission capabilities. Several methods of measurements are examined. The performance of the diode oscillator is determined by drawing a Rieke diagram for the packaged diode. Special emphasis is laid on the technique of measuring the admittance of the active diode without affecting its performance. It is shown that the the admittance transformation characteristics of the mounts determine the overall performance of the diode as an efficient oscillator. The performance of the diode also depends upon the effectiveness of the biasing network. Leakage in this network can cause considerable deterioration in the output power of the diode. Rieke diagram also shows the admittance range within which the diode oscillates or does not oscillate. A criteria for the stability of the diode oscillator, 'pulling figure', has been defined. Detailed results of the admittance transformation characteristics of the mounts is discussed.
