Abstract

More and more welded plate structures are being used as major components in the heavy machinery industry. To improve the level of reliability of these structures in actual use and still maintain an economical design more precise analytical procedures are constantly being required. The material presented in this paper is an attempt to fulfill this requirement for a simple frame whose members have varying cross sections and whose loading is in the form of a couple out-of- the-plane of the frame. To verify the proposed procedures a numerical example is worked out using it. This is then compared to the results obtained from a beam element computer program and both are related to actual field experience obtained with the structure.
