Abstract
One of the most serious injuries a football player can sustain is one to the cervical spine, or neck. A common mode of injury to the neck is a compressive injury, which results when a tackle is initiated with the top of the helmet. Vast amounts of protective gear are available for all other areas of a player's body, but there is a large research void in the area of protective sporting equipment for the neck. New products targeting compressive cervical spine injuries have many disadvantages. The focus of this thesis is the introduction of a new helmet liner to aid in preventing compressive cervical spine injuries by forming a bridge between the helmet and the shoulder pads. Anthropometric data was collected and impact tests were performed on current helmets. Results allowed for the creation of a general model for the liner, but the amount of vertical deflection present in the shoulder pads warrants future research beyond the scope of this thesis.
