Abstract
A leaning column is one which is pin ended and does not participate in providing lateral stability to the structure. As a result it relies on the columns in other parts of the structure for stability. In analyzing and designing unbraced frames, the effect of the leaning columns must be considered, as required by the Load and Resistance Factor Design Specification. Elastic stability of frames with leaning columns was first studied by Yura in 1971. He proposed a simple approach to designing columns in such frames. However, recent studies by Geschwindner indicate that Yura's method is very conservative and he proposed an empirical formula for the effective length of columns in frames to account for the destabilizing forces from the leaning column. Also the treatment of frames with leaning columns in the LRFD Specification is not clear. In this thesis, a computer program is developed to study the elastic and inelastic stability of rectangular frames with leaning columns, using the transfer matrix method and the displacement method. Frames with leaning columns will be designed by using the LRFD Specification and their ultimate strengths evaluated by using the program developed so as to verify the validity of Yura's and Geschwindner's methods and suggest possible improvements.
