Abstract

The partial pressure of Zn over Te-saturated ZnTe(c) was measured up to 635°G by measuring the optical absorbance of the vapor phase at the wavelength of 213.9 nm. The experimental technique consisted of measuring the optical absorbance at 213.9 nm of a sealed optical cell of known optical path length and temperature and containing either pure zinc, tellurium, or a Zn Te sample synthesized by reaction in the sealed cell of weighed amounts of the spectroscopically pure, vacuum melted elements. In this thesis the author reports the detailed experimental method of measurement. The data are useful in the investigations of other thermodynamic properties. No similar measurements have been reported for this temperature range (441 - 636°C).
