Abstract

Costen's syndrome describes an oral pathological condition in which there is severe pain in the temporomandibular joint of the afflicted individual. Costen contended that this condition was the result of posterior mandibular tooth loss without prosthetic replacement of the mission teeth, and was due to the resultant loss of vertical dimension. One of the numerous methods used to treat this syndrome is the fabrication of an appropriate bite opening device. This study was undertaken to determine what effect the Sears pivot, a modified bite-opening device, has upon the temporomandibular joint where there is decreased vertical dimension.
