Abstract
The study which follows concerns the investigation of pathogenic characteristics and the identification of four microbial strains. These strains represent variants of a microorganism isolated in pure culture from a lung abscess of a patient just prior to death. The main pathologic diagnosis at autopsy was of lupus erythematosus, and at no time during life of the patient nor at autopsy was there any suggestion of a possible etiologic relation between the microorganism and the condition of the patient. Reports of isolations of these unusual bacteria from pathologic processes are becoming more numerous, however, and a possible etiologic significance must be considered.
