Abstract

During a soldering, welding, or heat treating procedure of an orthodontic wire, recrystallization and subsequent grain growth may occur. The process of recrystallization and grain growth is a function of time and temperature, amount of cold working prior to heating and alloy composition. Grain size is mainly a function of the time of the heat application when the alloy is subjected to high temperatures. These temperatures are above the recrystallization temperature of the metal. Recrystallization brings about an abrupt change in mechanical properties as the material is heated to successively higher temperatures. This characteristic of recrystallization and grain growth with normal dental operations is limited to wrought structures as they have a tendency to revert to a more stable condition. This tendency is more prevalent in some types of wires than in others. Mechanical properties are usually reduced sufficiently to affect the structural service of the wire. A wrought dental chromium cobalt alloy, therefore, should never be subjected to a temperature at which these phenomena will occur. Relatively little is known about the mechanical properties or the microstructure of wrought chromium cobalt base alloys in dentistry. Manufacturers of wrought dental cobalt base alloys have published very little on the subject. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of various time and temperature combinations on the grain structure of a wrought dental chromium cobalt alloy. An attempt was made to relate recrystallization and grain growth changes with possible changes in mechanical properties of these alloys. Since the subject of grain size control has not received adequate attention by those interested in developing improved dental alloys, it is hoped that the findings in this study will prove useful.
