Abstract
Early investigators reported gross observational findings on growth of the fetal skull. More recent studies of isolated parts in the fetal skull have shed light on differential growth of these parts. In attempt to more fully understand the contribution of the symphysis to prenatal mandibular development, a study was made of the human fetal symphyseal joint. This study has merit as an adjunct to better understanding the development of this area, as well as being of academic interest. The student interested in growth and development of the mandible must be cognizant of the symphyseal contribution.
