Abstract
This study was undertaken with the purpose of histologically investigating the early morphological and specific metabolic changes occurring in the human oral mucosa after exposure to modern methylmethacrylate (acrylic resin). The nature of tissue responses attributed to this material is not fully understood, especially those alterations which do not prompt clinical complaints. In an attempt to better understand the biological acceptance of this material, a study was designed to challenge the oral mucosa with a variety of conventionally cured acrylic resin test pieces under in-the-mouth conditions. The initial cellular responses were studied under the light microscope and pertinent observations recorded and evaluated. The results obtained in this study are of value in that they provide academic interest to the student. Moreover, the practicing dentist is provided with a better understanding of the tissues which he has the responsibility to treat.
