Abstract
The aim of this investigation was to measure and compare the frictional forces developed by an orthodontic molar tube/orthodontic archwire interface system to the frictional forces developed by an orthodontic molar tube/orthodontic archwire/horizontal moment arm interface system during sliding movements along a cantilevered beam. A fixed appliance system was designed in vitro to simulate molar tooth movement under simulated periodontal resisting forces of I00g and 200g. Three sizes of stainless steel orthodontic wires (0.016 x 0.022, 0.017 x 0.025, 0.019 x 0.025) were utilized for each sample at both resisting force levels. The samples with the moment arm were compared to the samples without the moment arm using a two-tailed unpaired student T-test. It was found that mean frictional forces of the samples with a moment arm were 40% less than mean frictional forces of the samples without a moment arm. This was statistically significant at the p<0.001 level. It was also found that as the size of the wire increased the friction in the system decreased. This was found in both the horizontal moment arm group and the group without the horizontal moment arm.
