Abstract

The object of this study was to determine if various surface preparations and treatments of stainless steel orthodontic bracket bases would significantly improve their tensile bonding strength values to zinc polycarboxylate cement. Stainless steel orthodontic bracket bases were luted to the tooth enamel of extracted teeth with zinc polycarboxylate cement. The bond formed between the stainless steel, cement, and tooth enamel were stressed to failure in tension and the values were recorded. Differences in the tensile bond strength values were used to determine the efficacy of the various surface preparation and treatment procedures to stainless steel. Results of this study might be used to reduce the incidence of bond failure between the cement and the orthodontic bracket band or base.
