Abstract

The medical investigations of sickle cell disease have done much to aid those affected with this autosomal recessive disease. A better understanding of the pathophysiology of this disorder has allowed physicians to use transfusions, antibiotics, aspirin, heavy metals and other treatment modalities in controlling its effect. To sickle cell patients it means a normalization of life through less frequent crisis, pain, and hospitalization. They miss less school, enjoy increased activity, live longer and have a better psychological outlook on life than ever before. While the medical studies of sickle cell disease are extensive and continuing, the dental literature is sparse. This study was undertaken to add to the existing dental literature by documenting the clinical and radiograpic [sic] findings of a large group of sickle cell patients.
