Abstract
The objective of the present study was to extend the initial investigation of Dr. Sisulak. In addition to re-examining the various effective surface preparations and treatments of stainless steel orthodontic bracket bases which he found, additional surface preparations and treatments were employed. Two types of cements were used : zinc polycarboxylate cement (Durelon) and glass ionomer cement (Fuji Ionomer Type I). It was hoped that surface preparations or treatments for the stainless steel bracket bases might be found which would significantly improve tensile bond strength values to these two cement types. Even if this were not achieved, a more comprehensive insight into the nature of any chemical bonding mechanisms to stainless steel would be obtained.
