Abstract
This study was an extension of Dr. Lin's thesis research on the welding of Titanium Molybdenum Alloy (TMA) archwires. The flat-to-flat electrode configuration was utilized in an attempt to find optimum weld joints, with a minimum of distortion, while maintaining strength and ductility. Joint strength measurements, cold bend tests, and microscopic observations of the weld joint and joint structure were performed to establish the optimum welding conditions. As a result of this study, prescriptions have been developed for the welding of beta titanium, using four popular commercial orthodontic welders. This information should be of practical importance for clinical orthodontists who utilize beta titanium in their practice.
