Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation is to compare and evaluate the palatal stratum corneum layer supporting maxillary denture bases. Alterations in the character of the palatal mucosa are not fully understood, especially variations in the superficial cell layers. In an attempt to understand and interpret the changes occurring in the denture supporting tissues, a study was made of the palatal stratum corneum. This specific tissue being tn direct contact with the denture base presented notable variation. The denture bases were fabricated from methyl methacrylate (acrylic resin) and vulcanite. The tissues supporting the two types of denture bases were compared by histological examination to the tissues of the natural dentition and edentulous arch without denture replacement. The study has merit in evaluating the techniques of denture fabrication, as well as being of academic Interest. The dental practitioner of today must understand the physiological and pathological changes occurring In the tissues supporting artificial appliances.
