Abstract
There appears to be a definite but unknown relationship between diphenylhydantoin sodium gingival hyperplasia and inflammation. Many epileptics being treated with diphenylhydantoin sodium develop an overgrowth of gingiva which creates esthetic and hygienic problems. The hyperplasia of the gingiva appears to be the result of a proliferation of fibroblasts, but local inflammation has been implicated as a possible initiating and mediating factor in its development. This research project is designed to further clarify the relationship between hyperplasia of the gingiva caused by diphenylhydantoin and gingival inflammation. The scope of this study is only to attempt to demonstrate a relationship between certain histologic characteristics of the hyperplasia and experimentally produced inflammation in animals. It is hoped that this project may delineate areas for future investigation.
