Abstract

Lead acid batteries have been manufactured for well over 50 years but there has been very little research on process waste water treatment. Waste water effluent criteria required only neutralization and sedimentation of process waste water. Recently, the effluent criteria have been increasingly stringent with a low maximum lead and sulfate concentration. This paper reports on the research and development work done by one battery company and the author to develop a waste water treatment process to meet the effluent requirements.
