Abstract
The name of William James is most often associated with his pragmatic theory of truth or with his contributions to psychology. This is not surprising. His two volume work, The Principles of Psychology is a classic in its field. And many of his philosophical writings, especially Pragmatism, give a clear and forceful presentation of the theory of truth that bears that name. But there is another facet of his philosophic thought, not unrelated to his theory of truth, to which much less attention has been paid but toward which James mind turned often. And that is the subject of God. It is with this aspect of James thought that this thesis will be primarily concerned.
