Abstract

In recent years Hemolytic Anemia of the Newborn has received in creasing attention. The vast majority of such cases are due to maternal isosensitization involving the Rhesus Factor Hemolytic Anemi is also occasion lly found in infants of heterospecific pregnancies where the incompatibility is in the ABO system of Landsteiner It is the purpose of this study to determine the incidence of AW Hemolytic Disease and to compare fecal bilirubin excretion of infants of hetero specific pregnancies with that of infants of homospecific pregnancies.

This project was m de possible by or through the cooperation of the Milwaukee Blood Center the Obstetrical Staff of St.Joseph's Hospital, Milwaukee, its laboratory and its delivery room and nursery nurses.

Greatest gratitude is extended to Dr. Tibor J. Greenwalt who inspired the project, supervised the laboratory work involved, and translated the German references.

The Obstetrical Staff of St. Joseph's Hospital and especially its chief, Dr. George S. Kilkenny, are to be thanked for cooperation in collecting maternal and cord blood as well as meconium samples from their patients.

Delivery Room nurses are to be thanked for their excellent cooperation in collecting cord blood samples. The Nursery nurses are to be thanked for accepting and fulfilling the unpleasant task of collecting all meconium passed on the first and second day by over four hundred infants.
