Abstract
In acquired bleeding conditions hemorrhagic diatheses are often due to excessive systemic fibrinolysis. However, it is difficult to determine whether the fibrinolytic syndrome is primary, or is a counter-mechanism secondary to disseminated intravascular coagulation. As the treatment of choice for primary fibrinolysis and that for intravascular coagulation are mutually exclusive, there is a pressing need for a method to distinguish them. Because the ethanol gelation test is a hopeful move toward this end, it occasioned the present study.
