Abstract

Probably no other subject has been so thoroughly discussed and has had such a small amount of actual experimental work done upon it, as the question of whether the enamel does or does not receive nourishment once it is fully formed. Many times in the past, in various classes, problems which depended, for their final solution, upon whether the enamel received nourishment or not, were brought up for discussion, and finally left unanswered. We sensed the importance of the majority of these questions, which will be discussed thoroughly later, and determined to find the answer to the basic question,- the answer to which would obviously solve the various other questions under consideration. Upon delving into the subject thoroughly we became astounded at the small amount of actual work that had been done upon such an unquestionably important subject, and even more astounded at the variations in the conclusions that were drawn by the various men from the results they obtained by their experimental work. The conclusions drawn by one man were refuted and quite decisively proven false by another. The arguments pro and con did not carry enough weight for one to denounce either as true or untrue; or allow us to draw our own conclusions, and forever be satified [sic] with our convictions. As a positive solution was not to be gotten from the works of other men, it was considered necessary to resort to actual experiment, to clarify the subject. Promised, the support of such worthy men as Doctors Tharinger and Gulas, we felt that we could attain our motive, and it may be justly said at this time that what little we did accomplish we have them to thank for particularily [sic], and the many errors we committed we have no one to blame but ourselves.
