Abstract
During the course of postgraduate study begun in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at The Milwaukee County General Hospital and in The Graduate School of Marquette University, the author of this paper became interested in the apocrine glands and the diseases which result from their dysfunction. In particular, the disease which is known as hidradenitis suppurativa was the entity which suggested a study of the apocrine glands and the functions. That little had actually been done in this study was evident after a review of the literature available. Now, after much more extensive investigation, it is found that there is much which can be learned about these structures which are called sweat glands but which are yet different in so many ways from the usual eccrine type of sweat gland.
After additional clinical experience wherein individuals with diseases of the apocrine glands were seen, more interest was stimulated because the condition simulated several other proctologic conditions which confused the matter of making a proper diagnosis. Proper treatment definitely influences the course and prognosis of the disease as incomplete methods of therapy serve only as a temporary respite for the patient. The matter of proper treatment is a somewhat complicated matter, and, as will be shown, many authors suggest several different methods of treatment.
