Abstract
"Natural childbirth" is of relatively recent origin in the United States, beginning to attract public attention in the early 1950's. Even in view of its relative "newness," it is somewhat surprising that there has been a relative paucity of objective, scientific studies concerning natural childbirth during the last two decades. Empirical studies dealing with the psychological characteristics of women who choose natural childbirth are almost nonexistent.
