Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate sodium metabolism and water balance in patients with congestive heart failure. This necessitated careful regulation of the sodium intake and determinations of the urinary sodium output, the blood sodium level, the extra-cellular fluid volume, the fluid intake and the urinary output. Studies were made on patient in decompensation and in compensation as well as during the interval phases preceding failure and coming out of failure. Finally, the role of sodium metabolism in the pathogenesis of cardiac edema was briefly considered.
