Abstract
In general surgery, excluding thoracic surgery, postoperative stelectasis occurs most frequently following operations which involve upper abdominal incisions. the incidence of such stelectasis, as reported by other sources, has been lowered by advances in anesthesia, surgical technique, and antibiotics, but remains at five per cent (8). In an attempt to lower this figure, we have utilized supervised preoperative and postoperative breathing exercises administered by a trained physiotherapist.
