Abstract

For about 70 years the thyroid gland has been known as an iodine depot and a source of thyroxine. Much study has been devoted to determining the chemical structure of the iodine-containing compounds of the thyroid gland and the general effects of the thyroid hormone are well known. However, the mechanism of synthesis and release of the thyroid hormones constitutes many interesting and challenging problems.
