Abstract
The novel, it has been said, is the literary form which exerts the widest influence upon the reading public. This may or may not be true, but the truth is likely to be on the side of those who make the statement, because of all literature the novel form has the widest and deepest appeal for the vast majority of mankind, who after leaving the elementary or the high schools find intellectual delight in the magazine and novel principally. If this be the case, and statistics would bear out the contention, it can readily be seen that the opinions and subsequent outlook upon life and conduct itself can be ultimately traces to the matter which people read.
