Abstract
The metal-free phthalocyanines were accidentally discovered in 1928 at the Grangmouth Scottish Dyeworks. At the suggestion of the Research Committee of I.C.I. (Dyestuffs), Professor R.P. Linstead and his co-workers determined the structure of metal-free phthalocyanine and several of its metallic derivatives in a series of investigations beginning in 1934. Since that time some twenty-five metallic derivatives have been synthesized and studied. Attempts to polymerize the phthalocyanines have met with moderate success.
