Abstract
Although the reticuloendothelial system (RES) was defined over forty years go, little is known of its basic cellular physiology and biochemistry. This is perhaps due to the predominant emphasis on methods for evaluating the functional status of the RES by assessing clearance rates of intravenously injected particulate matter. In the early forties Gomeri's histochemical observations established that RE cells are characterized in general by high levels of a nonspecific acid phosphomonoesterase. The studies reported in this thesis involve the measurement or acid and alkaline phosphomonoesterase as a criterion for evaluating the functional status of the RES.
